Perfect Transfers Every Time: How to Use Polymer Clay Transfer Papers

Transfer papers are one of the easiest and most beautiful ways to add patterns and illustrations to polymer clay. Yet many makers struggle with blurry, grainy, or peeling prints. In this post, I’ll walk you through how to use the S.I. Originals Transfer Papers, share common mistakes, and show you how to get sharp, vibrant results every time.

What Are Transfer Papers?

Transfer papers are thin sheets with a special ink layer that transfers onto polymer clay using water. After baking, the print becomes permanent — no painting or sealing required.

The S.I. Originals Transfer Papers are designed for clean, consistent transfers. You’ll find different designs in the collection, such as the Floral Patterns Transfer Sheets and the popular Christmas Transfer Sheets, all perfectly matched to my clay cutter designs.

How to Use S.I. Originals Transfer Papers – Step by Step

1. Prepare your clay

Roll out your polymer clay evenly until you have a smooth sheet. Light colors like white, ecru or pastels give the most vibrant results.

2. Apply the print

Cut the transfer paper to size and place it print side down on the clay.

Use an acrylic roller or your fingers to press it down firmly and evenly.

💡 Important: firm pressure helps the ink bond properly to the clay — it’s the key to avoiding blurry spots.

3. Rinse under running water

Hold the clay and paper under gentle running lukewarm water until the top layer of paper begins to lift off by itself.

Do not use a sponge or dab it dry — leaving it moist helps the print stay rich and even.

4. Cut and bake

Let the surface drip off slightly, but don’t dry it completely.

Cut out your shapes using your favorite cutters.

Your pieces can go straight into the oven with the print on top.

I personally bake for at least 60 minutes for maximum strength and adhesion.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

  • Blurry or grainy print: not enough pressure or too much water.
  • Print peeling off: the clay was too wet or not properly pressed.
  • Smudges: paper shifted during application.
  • Color changes: oven temperature too high.

Troubleshooting: When Things Go Wrong

Print looks grainy or faded

Use a little less water and press more firmly. Let the paper sit for 2–3 minutes before removing it.

Print peels off after baking

Let the transfer dry briefly before baking and make sure your oven isn’t too hot.

Colors change during baking

That’s normal — the ink becomes slightly darker and more vibrant. If the colors turn brownish, your oven is too hot. Use an oven thermometer for accurate control.

Print flakes or cracks

This happens with overbaking or excessive moisture. Cover your clay with a sheet of baking paper to soften the direct heat.

Creative Ways to Use Transfer Papers

Transfer papers aren’t just for earrings! Try them for:

  • Pendants and charms
  • Bracelet components
  • Beads and keychains
  • Decorative tags or clay labels

The Floral Patterns Transfer Sheets pair beautifully with cutters like the Sun Daisy Cutter or Essential Studs Cutter.

Finishing Touches

After baking, you can optionally seal your piece with a thin layer of varnish or UV resin for extra shine and durability — especially useful for jewelry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to seal the print with varnish or resin?

Not required, but it gives a smoother finish and protects against wear.

Can I use transfer papers on colored clay?

Yes, but be aware that darker bases will slightly mute the print. Lighter clay tones work best.

Why do my colors darken during baking?

That’s part of the normal process — heat deepens the colors slightly.

💡 Tip: Use an oven thermometer to make sure the temperature isn’t too high.

My print is peeling or looks patchy — what went wrong?

Usually the clay was too wet or the paper wasn’t pressed firmly enough. Use running water, apply even pressure, and never dab it dry.

Can I reuse transfer papers?

No, each sheet is for single use only.

Should I remove the paper before or after baking?

Always before baking — only the ink layer stays on the clay.
